Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase Constituency, Hon. Mubarak Muntaka has thrown down the gauntlet to his colleague MP from the other side of the political divide representing constituents in Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, to reveal any secret conversation the two held before the vetting of Minister for Communications, Hon. Ursula Owusu.
Speaking on Peacefm in an interview, the Minority Chief Whip, flatly denied allegations levelled against him by the Assin Central MP and dared him to disclose whatever clandestine conversation, if any; that has ensued between them.
The outspoken NPP MP, is reported to have described Hon Muntaka Mubarak as “dumb” for referring him (Agyepong) to Parliament’s Privileges Committee over purported insults.
He claims to be unfazed about his invitation to the Privileges Committee of Parliament.
Mr. Agyapong is reported to have described the House as “useless” for having Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu as its Majority leader on Accra-based Net2 TV.
Muntaka Mubarak said on the Floor of Parliament a couple of weeks ago that, “I have the video and a lot of publication to have referred to Parliament as useless. Mr Speaker, I have the tape here, our colleague is referring to this House as useless. If I am to paraphrase, ‘if this house is not useless, we will not have the likes of Osei Mensah-Bonsu to be its leader’.”
These comments compelled Muntaka Mubarak to file a motion to refer Kennedy Agyapong to the committee. He wants the Assin Central MP suspended from Parliament for the rest of 2018.
The MPs on both sides of the aisle agreed to the request to haul Kennedy Agyapong before the Committee. The controversial MP faces the committee in camera on Tuesday for his alleged verbal attack on Parliament.
But Kennedy Agyapong insists Muntaka Mubarak’s referral was based on comments taken out of context.
He has however clarified that he called the August House “cheap”, and not “useless” as was widely reported.
“A whole Member of arliament, you don’t even listen to the tape and you consume information and just come to parliament and say that I have insulted parliament. Let them play the tape.
If he dares me i will disclose what he told me to ask Ursula Owusu before her vetting. Such a dumb guy,” he added.
However, the Asawase MP, not to be undone, has asked Hon, Kennedy Agyapong to bring it on.
“He should not forget that i’m a Zongo boy, he cannot intimidate me in anyway. We are all Members of Parlament who came here through the votes of our constituents. I will meet and give him equal measure if he continues to misbehave and spew lies,” Muntaka fumed.
Meanwhile, even before he faces the Committee, the maverick NPP MP has admitted he erred.
“I have apologized to the Majority leader. I have; I am a human being… he is my best friend,” the MP told the press.
In a related development, Muntaka Mubarak, says he is willing to fully assist with the work of the privileges committee, but added that an apology from the NPP MP might settle the matter.
“I have received an invitation from the privileges committee to provide all the evidence that I have, and to appear on the 26th, which is Tuesday. So I have already presented all the evidence that I have.”
“If he appears and he apologises, I am sure it will end there, but if he appears and he is going to flex there, then obviously, it will go through the full hog,” Muntaka Mubarak said.
