The Ghana Police Service has grabbed five people suspected to have been involved in last Tuesday’s tribal clash in Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra that left at least two people dead and several people injured while an estimated number of 30 people are reported to have been left homeless. Those dead include a pregnant woman.
Subsequently, the joint police and military team that were deployed to the scene to maintain law and order are expected to remain there a bit longer to ensure total peace.
The police said they retrieved some dangerous locally manufactured weapons on the suspects who have been placed in police custody awaiting prosecution.
Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Osabarima Oware Asare Pinkro disclosed in a media interview in Accra.
Life is said to be slowly returning to normal in the area after the disturbances, but the police have say they have information that some miscreants are bent on launching reprisals attacks on their opponents, which is why it has become necessary for team to remain stationed there.
According to sources available to Independent, the deadly clash between the Dagombas and the Konkombas in Agbogbloshie was a revival of ‘old wounds’ which were also aggravated by an accusation of theft by one side against the other.
This allegedly sparked mayhem leading to the burning of shops and destruction of property, among others.
Some people have also read political meanings into the incident describing it as haven been necessitated by a disagreement between some factions in ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, has described the incident as “shameful”. He has therefore appealed to his kinsmen to channel their anger against poverty rather than hacking each other at the least opportunity.
“I will appeal to all of them to exercise patience…Please we shouldn’t fight among ourselves. Our enemy is poverty: no money to eat, no food to eat. We should start thinking about that than ways to resort to killing each other,” he stated in an interview yesterday.
