The director of Bureau of National Investigations William Akwasi Appiah has been sacked, the Minister of National Security Albert Kan Dapaah has confirmed to Starrfmonline.com.
He has been replaced by the Director General at the Research Department responsible for External Intelligence and also Ambassador-at-large Rashid Inusah.
“Yes, there has been some changes. We’re issuing a statement to that effect soon,” Mr. Dapaah told starrfmonline.com
The decision was taken at a meeting held at the BNI headquarters in Accra Thursday afternoon.
It is unclear the reasons behind the changes at the fortified investigative edifice, however, sources say it may be linked to the arrest of deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho and how some opposition officials including former President John Mahama had access to him while behind bars.
The security sources explained that judgement to allow a photo of a suspect in custody is a serious security breach and a poor judgment on his part.
They say while the former president has every right to visit him, but photos are not permitted.
